NICO’s products are designed for use in both minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures as well as traditional open craniotomies and spinal surgery. Our patented products make endoscopic approaches a reality and minimize the need for large craniotomies, giving the clinician opportunities for reduced procedural trauma for the patient. Regardless of the clinical approach, NICO provides the clinician with a more controlled, more efficient and less traumatic alternative to traditional tumor resection.
The NICO Myriad system is the first mechanical or non-thermal tissue removal system compatible with all indicated surgical approaches to central nervous system soft tumor removal. Physicians that manage neuro and spinal tumors have been limited in the past by how they can approach, access and remove targeted areas. Even after accessing the site, there was often the challenge of extended procedure time for partial or complete tumor removal and increased risk of collateral damage to adjacent tissue because of the energy source being used. If physicians can’t access and safely remove the tumor through a minimally invasive approach, their only options are to use an alternative device, which requires a more invasive surgical approach such as open craniotomy or open spinal surgery.
These limitations are just a few examples of the restrictions and challenges in the minimally invasive neuro and spinal field, where only limited product improvements have been demonstrated for more than a decade. Addressing these limitations and adding significantly more control for delicate tissue shaving and drastically reducing surgical procedure times were of the highest priority when NICO engineers set out to develop a product that would revolutionize the neuro and spinal tumor removal market.
